Ruralco Water southern Basin Market Update 7 May 2025 – Presented by Phil Grahame
Another warm and dry week has passed, with similar conditions forecast for the week ahead. Southern Basin storage levels currently sit at 51%, a significant drop from 76% at the same time last year. The full impact of anticipated inflows into Menindee remains unclear, with these not expected to arrive before the end of June. Demand for temporary water allocation remains strong, driven by ongoing dry conditions and higher-than-usual usage for this time of year. This is placing considerable pressure on supply and has resulted in a sharp increase in prices. While it’s difficult to predict how the rest of the season will unfold, we expect demand to remain strong until irrigation activity begins to ease. Next week will be a critical one, with updated allocation outlooks for Victoria, NSW Murray, and the Murrumbidgee scheduled for release on 15 May. These updates come at a pivotal time and should offer valuable insight into water availability for the 2025/26 season. Now that the Federal Election has concluded, we also anticipate communication from the Commonwealth regarding the 2024 Open Tender under the ‘Restoring Our Rivers’ program, and an update to the Expression of Interest 1: Remaining Southern Connected Basin Catchments.
